Sadio Mane has been crowned African Footballer of the Year following a season in which he scored the winning penalty for Senegal as they won their first Africa Cup of Nations championship and repeated the feat when they qualified for the World Cup.

The 30-year-old attacker, who just signed a three-year contract with German heavyweights Bayern Munich, won the accolade for the first time in 2019 while playing for English club Liverpool.

“I am very honored and overjoyed to be receiving this award again,” Mane said on Thursday. “Many thanks to my coaches, club and national team teammates, and friends who supported me during difficult times.”

“I dedicate this prize to Senegal’s young.” “I’m very emotional and don’t know how to express how I feel,” he added.

Asisat Oshoala of Nigeria won the Women’s Player of the Year award for the sixth time, surpassing compatriot Perpetua Nkwocha.

Due to an injury, the 27-year-old Barcelona attacker has been forced to miss the current Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Tiwa Savage, a Nigerian singer, and the Ivorian ensemble Magic System performed at the event, which was hosted by Cameroonian actress and broadcaster Nadia Buari.
